For the sake of cross-country comparability, breakdowns by economic activity are provided according to the International Standard Industrial Classification, Revision 4 (ISIC Rev.4), at 1-digit (sector) level or higher. This may require a mapping with the original national classification.
Breakdowns by region are provided according to the OECD TL classification, at TL2 level.
Breakdowns by business legal form are provided according to the following simplified classification:
LL: Limited liability
PA: Partnership
SP: Sole proprietorship
_X: Unknown/Unspecified/Other
Business entries: Whenever possible, they correspond to enterprise births, thus excluding reorganisations of existing businesses (merger, spin-off, buy-out, change of legal form, etc.). Please see the Eurostat-OECD Manual on Business Demography Statistics for further information on the concept of enterprise birth. Note that available statistics may deviate from this target for some countries. Please see country-specific metadata for details.
Business exits: For timeliness reasons, they usually correspond to administrative deregistrations rather than enterprise deaths in the sense of the Eurostat-OECD Manual on Business Demography Statistics. Statistics on enterprise deaths exclude closures due to mergers, take-overs, changes of legal form and reactivations within 2 years, but they are necessarily less timely. Please see country-specific metadata for details.
Bankruptcies: These statistics usually correspond to the initiation of insolvency procedures. Note that such procedures do not always end up in the dissolution of the enterprise. Please see country-specific metadata for details.
Seasonally-adjusted series are available whenever they are provided by the national data source. Please see country-specific metadata for details.
