Prior to 2002, data are mid-year estimates obtained by averaging official estimates at 31 December for two consecutive years. From 2002, the average annual population is calculated by applying the arithmetic mean to quarterly population figures: Annual average = (population on 1 January + 2x 1 April + 2x 1 July + 2x 1 October + 1 January of the following year) divided by 8.
