Based on GDP - production approach. Statistics New Zealand produces two different series for quarterly GDP in volume: an expenditure-based measure and a production-based measure. Each series results from independent data and estimation techniques and provides an alternative measure of New Zealand's economic activity. Statistics New Zealand promotes the production-based measure as the preferred measure of economic activity in the short-term.

In December 2014, New Zealand adopted the 2008 SNA ("System of National Accounts 2008", Commission of the European Communities - Eurostat, International Monetary Fund, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, United Nations and World Bank, 2009).

The full implentation of the 1993 SNA was made in 2000. Chain indices are used for calculating volume changes and the resulting chained volume estimates are not additive.

The financial intermediation services indirectly measured (FISIM) are allocated to industries and institutional sectors.

The quarterly figures are adjusted for seasonal variations, method X12 ARIMA.

Annual data published by New Zealand in its national publications are data for fiscal years ending 31 March whereas the annual data shown here are calculated by sum of the original quarterly data for the calendar year.
