Definition: 
The crude birth rate of an area is the number of births actually occurring in that area is a given time period, divided by the population of the area as estimated at the middle of the particular time period. The rate is usually expressed in terms of “per 1 000 of population”.

Context: 
The crude birth rate is capable of considerable refinement according to the various specific viewpoints adopted in the analysis of vital statistics. For example, it may be adjusted to allow for changes in the proportion of the female population in the childbearing age groups.
