GENOMICS / PHARMACOGENOMICS

Statistics Directorate
Definition:
The study of genes and their function. Advances in genomics due to the Human Genome Project and other genome research into plants, animals and micro-organisms are enhancing our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of genomes.

Context:
Genomics stimulates the discovery of health care products by revealing thousands of new biological targets for the development of drugs and by identifying innovative ways to design new drugs, vaccines and DNA diagnostics. Genomic-based therapeutics includes both protein drugs and small molecule drugs. Genomics is also used in plant and animal breeding programmes.
