The ONS compiles the overall balance of payments aggregates from many sources:

1. Banks data supplied by the Bank of England

2. Various Government Departments

3. Surveys of other financial institutions

4. Surveys of private nonfinancial corporations

5. International Passenger Survey

6. Customs trade data and Intrastat

7. A variety of surveys and other data related to the transport sector.

Data are broadly consistent with the IMF BPM5

Quality comments
Trade in gold is excluded from the trade in goods statistics, and included in the Financial Account of the Balance of Payments. However, trade in ores and concentrates and finished manufactures of gold are included in the trade in goods statistics.

Data refer to current balance of transactions in respect of visible trade, services, interest, profits and dividends and transfers (other than capital transfers).

Seasonal adjustment
The seasonally adjusted current balance series presented in US dollars is obtained by converting the seasonally adjusted quarterly figures expressed in national currency using the quarterly average exchange rate. The annual figures are obtained by converting annual raw figures in national currency using the annual average exchange rate. It should be noted that the sum of the quarterly figures does not necessarily equal the corresponding annual figure due to fluctuations in the exchange rate.
