Sampling The sample frame is the national register of enterprises plus balance sheet office completed with information from chambers of commerce, business federations and agencies of the National Bank of Belgium. The data is monthly and the sample size is 1950 units. The response rate is 96%.
Key statistical concept The results based on the qualitative business tendency survey show businessmen's judgement on developments experienced during the past month, their assessment of the current situation and their expectations for the following three months in their own firm. Questions relate to production, orders, sales, prices and demand.
Aggregation and consolidation The results are expressed as the per cent balance of positive and negative answers in the total replies which are then converted to a single aggregate series by means of a simple arithmetic mean. A value of +10 means that there were ten per cent more positive than negative replies. All data is on a monthly basis except the degree of capacity utilisation in manufacturing industry which is gauged quarterly.
Weights Replies of enterprises are weighted according to turnover in respect of each product group. Replies are then aggregated to subsectors and sectors using a weight based on value added figures.
Other comments Data include printing and food industries from 1985.
