Subjects > Business tendency surveys > United States

Country: United States Subject: Business tendency surveys (non-manufacturing)

USA.BN.......
Direct source
Institute for Supply Management, US

Variables collected
Variables collected are:

- Business situation: current
- Raw material stocks: tendency
- Employment: tendency
- Orders intentions or demand: tendency

Aggregation and consolidation
Balance results are calculated as the net difference between the number of responses in the positive economic direction (higher and lower for Supplier Deliveries) and the negative economic direction (slower and faster for Supplier Deliveries)

Seasonal adjustment
Data correspond to the net figures. Data is seasonally adjusted for Business Activity, New Orders, Prices, and Employment. The remaining indexes have not indicated significant seasonality. The X12-ARIMA program is used for the seasonal adjustment.

Name of collection/source
The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) carries out the monthly Manufacturing Report On Business. The full text version is posted on ISM's Web site at www.ism.ws on the first business day of every month. The ISM is the new name of the formerly National Association of Purchasing Management since January 2002.

Variables collected

Variables collected are:

- Production: tendency
- Raw material stocks: tendency
- Order books: level
- Orders inflow: tendency
- Export orders inflow: tendency
- Employment: tendency
- Confidence indicator: composite indicator

Sampling
The Manufacturing ISM Report On Business® is based on data compiled from monthly replies to questions asked of purchasing and supply executives in over 400 industrial companies, for 370 purchasing and supply executives in over 62 different industries representing nine divisions from the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) categories. Membership of the Business Survey Committee is diversified by SIC category and is based on each industry's contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Sector coverage
Twenty industries in the manufacturing sector from various U.S. geographical areas are represented. The 20 manufacturing Standard Industry Classification codes are: Food; Tobacco; Textiles; Apparel; Wood & Wood Products; Furniture; Paper; Printing & Publishing; Chemicals; Petroleum; Rubber & Plastic Products; Leather; Glass, Stone, & Aggregate; Primary Metals; Fabricated Metals; Industrial & Commercial Equipment & Computers; Electronic Components & Equipment; Transportation & Equipment; Instruments & Photographic Equipment; and Miscellaneous (a preponderance of jewelry, toys, sporting goods, musical instruments).

Key statistical concept
The tendency survey of manufacturing activity is often used to obtain indicators of business confidence. Along with the consumer indicator, indicators of business confidence allow comparisons to be made of the business and consumer moods. The overall index is a key gauge of manufacturing activity. Although its correlation with manufacturing output on a month to month basis is limited, it is usually an excellent gauge of the underlying trend. Moreover, despite the simple system of collection used, the series is much less volatile than other manufacturing indicators. In the survey, companies are asked if activity in each category is better, higher or greater; worse, lower or less; or the same compared with a month ago.

Aggregation and consolidation
The ISM provides two figures for each category: "net" figures, corresponding to the balance of the percent of positive responses over the percent of negative responses and a diffusion index calculated as the seasonally adjusted value of the sum of the percent of positive responses plus one half of those responding "the same".

Seasonal adjustment
Manufacturing ISM Report On Business® data is seasonally adjusted except for Backlog of Orders, Prices, and Customers' Inventories

Country: United States Subject: Business tendency surveys (manufacturing) > Confidence indicators > Composite indicators > National indicator

USA.BSCICP01.......
Key statistical concept
The series refers to the PMI: the composite index for the manufacturing sector published in the Manufacturing Report On Business. It is based on the seasonally adjusted diffusion indexes for the following five indicators at equal weights:New Orders,Production,Employment,Supplier Deliveries,Inventories. A PMI index over 50 represents growth or expansion within the manufacturing sector of the economy compared with the prior month. A reading under 50 represents contraction, and a reading at 50 indicates an equal balance between manufacturers reporting advances and declines in their business. The formula has been revised in the January 2008 Report on Business and the PMI Index numbers have been revised back to January 2001.

Before the PMI referred to the Purchasing managers's Index. The single index number is seasonally adjusted, all seasonal adjustment factors are supplied by the U.S. Department of Commerce and are subject annually to relatively minor changes when conditions warrant them.

Weights
It is a diffusion index based on a average of five adjusted diffusion indexes: new orders, production, employment, suppliers deliveries, and inventories/stocks. Starting from January 2001 data, the component indicators have equal weights. Before January 2001 data the index is a weighted average of the five component indicators with different weights: new orders (30%), production (25%), employment (20%), suppliers deliveries (15%), and stocks (10%). Annual revisions only occur in January, when seasonal factors are reestimated. A reading above (below) 50% indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding (contracting).
