| Other coverage All data refer to urban areas only. The source of data on wages/earnings is the quarterly establishment survey. The establishment survey has been conducted since 1957 and now covers more than 2 million units in urban areas. Private sector enterprises are excluded. The survey report form has 20 items including information by wages/earnings and other information on employment. The survey form allows cross tabulation by provinces, type of ownership and industry group. Since 2003, employment statistics are based in United Nations ISIC revision 3. |

| Key statistical concept Average earnings refer to the average of total remuneration to all employment in various units in urban areas (excluding private and individual enterprises) during a certain period of time, including staff and workers and other employment (i.e., reemployed retirees or those who are from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan or other countries). Prior to 1994, annual data refer to average earnings of staff and workers which are calculated by dividing the total wage bill of staff and workers in the reference period by the average number of staff and workers in the reference period. The total wage bill of staff and workers refers to total remuneration payment to all staff and workers in various units in urban areas (excluding private and individual enterprises) during a certain period of time. |
