Reference period Data refer to 1 October of each year. The last population census was conducted in 2010.

Scope

Population coverage Data refer to the resident population (de jure), excluding foreign military personnel and foreign diplomatic corps and their dependants. Data include the Okinawa prefecture (Ryu-Kyu Islands) which was returned to Japan in 1972, increasing the total population by about 990 000 persons.
