The common unit of computer storage from personal computers to mainframes. A byte holds the equivalent of a single character, such as a letter, a dollar sign, or decimal point.

A kilobyte consists of approximately one thousand bytes, a megabyte of one million bytes, and a gigabyte of one billion bytes (Handbook on Geographic Information Systems and Digital Mapping, Studies in Methods, Series F, No. 79, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Statistics Division, New York, 2000, Annex VI - Glossary).
