Definition:
Intergenerational mobility is defined as the extent to which some key characteristics and outcomes of individuals differ from those of their parents.

Context:
Different strands of analysis have focused on different types of indicators. The economic literature has mainly focused on movements between income (or earnings) classes or percentiles of the distribution. The sociological literature has mainly focused on movements between occupations ranked according to their prestige or social class.
